To
be or not to be: amalgam or not amalgam
Bio-compatible dental restauration
In
the past few years there has been a growing concern for the
potential health hazards imposed by use of dental materials that
include toxic compounds. The most common source of concern has
been the mercury found in silver fillings. There is much
disscussion about the toxic content of this filling material.
Holistic dentists understand that mercury is a toxin and even
small amounts are too great a risk to the body and your overall
health. While amalgam fillings last longer than composites,
they
put extreme pressure on the tooth and often cause weakening of
the tooth — meaning that the filling may outlast the tooth it
was placed in. Truly holistic dentists do not place mercury and
meet or exceed safety guidelines for removal. We believe it is
an outdated material that may be affecting your health. In our
surgery we have not used mercury silver filling since 1997.
Instead we have used either inlays or a tooth coloured plastic
filling which is called composite, they are actually a
combination of plastic and microcorporic particles of a
glass-like material. The plastic enables us to bond the filling
into the tooth and the glass-like particles help to make the material
resistant to wear.
Our position:
We
do not change all amalgam fillings automatically, only:
-
if its condition
is unsatisfactory,
-
if it is the request of the patient, and it does not matter
whether an aesthetic expectation or a
concern of poision is in the background of the request),
-
and naturally, if it is proved that it is harmful to the
patient’s health.
The removal of mercury amalgam is needed to be carried out in
the most careful way.
ARS DENTAL can offer you more
bio-compatible fillings:
The vorementioned composit fillings
These composite fillings have
the ability to bond chemically with dentine and enamel, allowing for
smaller restorations which can be sealed into the tooth. Fissure
sealants were developed as part of this technology so that the small pits and cracks in molar and premolar teeth could be sealed soon
after their eruption, before they develop cavities.
We
pay attention to the form of occlusal surface shaped
anatomically, which is very important in the well function of
masticatory organ.cf. under.
 inlays:
We often encounter situations
where a significant part of the biting surface of a tooth has
been damaged, often a portion of the outer wall of the tooth has
been lost as well. To prevent shifting of adjacent teeth or
gradual deterioration of bite we want a material, that will
provide a stable and long lasting result. Here we would use a
restauration which is made either of gold or ceramics and is
formed on a model of your teeth by our dental technician.
